"Men don't think any differently than women, they just make more noise about being able to!" - I have too much time on my hand.
"Kel suddenly realized what was wrong, what they were trying to say. They thought a man had beaten her. She began to giggle, then to laugh. It took some time to convince them that her injuries were normal for a squire who was silly enough to joust with Lord Raoul and get stuck with a baby griffin." (111) - I found that one rather funny.
"At our level, there are four kinds of warrior," he told Kel. He raised a fist and held up one large finger. "Heroes, like Alanna the Lioness. Warriors who find dark places and fight in them alone. This is wonderful, but we live in the real world. There aren't many places without hope or light." He raised a second finger. "We have knights. Plain, everyday knights, like your brothers. They patrol their bordors and protect their tenents, or they go into troubled areas at the king's command and sort them out. They fight in battles, usually against other knights. A hero will work like an everyday knight for a time- it's expected. And most knights must be clever enough to manage alone." Kel nodded. "We have soldiers," Raoul continued, raising a third finger. "Those are warriors, including knights, who can manage as long as they're told what to do. These are more common, thank Mithros, you'll find them in charge of companies in the army, under the eye of a general. Without people who can take orders, we'd be in real trouble. "Commanders." He raised his little finger. "Good ones, people with a knack for it,like, say, the queen, or Buri, or young Dom, they're as rare as heroes. Commanders have an eye not just for what they do, but for what those around them do. Commanders size up people's strengths and weaknesses. They know where someone will shine and where they will collapse. Other warriors will obey a true commander because they can tell that the commander knows what he- or she- is doing." Raoul picked up a quill and toyed with it. "You've shown flashes of being a commander. I've seen it. So has Qasim, your friend Neal, even Wyldon, though it would be like pulling teeth to get him to admit it. My job is to see if you will do more than flash, with the right training. The realm needs commanders. Tortall is big. We have too many still-untamed pockets, too cursed many hideyholes for rogues, too many hungry enemies to nibble at our bordors and our seafaring trade. If you have what it takes, the Crown will use you. We're too desperate for good commanders to let one slip away..." (Raoul, 114) - I like that.
"Because if a member of the old nobility kidnapped one of the new nobility, it would cause a civil war," replied the king. "I like to discourage that kind of thing." (King Jonathan, 158) - That one makes me laugh.
"Wear it in health and victory," Queen Thayet said. "Now, show the nice people." Kel turned, and showed them." (377) - That one's also funny! "The nice people..." Haha.
"...It's true, at the university I never would have spent time with anyone so much younger than me.I would have definatley lost something then. These little fellows aren't always testing each other like males of my advanced years." He bowed, and Kel smiled. "And I wouldn't give up your friendship for all the healer credentials in the world." "Me?" she demanded, astonished. They walked into the waiting room, the first pages there. "You," Neal said, leaning against a wall and crossing his arms. "You are an education, Keladry of Mindelan." Kel put her hands on her hips. "I'm not sure that's a compliment." Neal grinned. "Neither am I," he teased. As Seaver, Merric, and Owen came in, Kel pointed at Neal. "You will pay for that, on the practice courts," she informed him. Owen promptly went over and clapped Neal on the shoulder. "It was good knowing you," he told the older boy solemnly." (Neal, Kel, and Owen, 188) - Am I the only one who thinks Owen is just the funniest!!!!? And remember that quote about Happy? That was so sweet... And sad...
"You have no nerves," he said bitterly. "Just as well, because you have too many." she retorted." (Neal and Kel, 209) - Yeah. Yeah, he really does. Imagine his paranoia when his daughter tries for her shield!
"Most girls don't have a covey of boys whacking them with sticks every morning." (Kel, 58) - I just like the wording, don't you? A covey of boys whacking them with sticks.... Heehee.
"If this isn't friendship, what is?" he asked cheerfully. "After people abuse my body all morning in the courts, I'm going to let you bruise me some more." (Neal, 63) - And they wonder why I love Neal?
"Reporting for inspection, general, sir!" barked Seaver as he gave a brisk salute... Kel put her hands on her hips. "What is this? You came to me because I'm the girl?" she asked, mock indignant.' "Of course not. You just have an eye for these things," repied Neal. "When it isn't black," Esmond murmered, and grinned." (Seaver, Kel, Neal, and Esmond, 69) - I like Esmond. Except what he said about Kel's worrying about Lalasa too much. But still.
"If we pick a fight, we're just as bad as them. Combat should be used just to help people who can't defend themselves, period." "Well, if I don't fight back, and they pound on me,then I'm one of the people I should be defending," said Esmond. Kel, still holding Merric, looked at her freckled yearmate. "Did that even make sense?" she asked Esmond. He smiled crookedly. "We have to stand up to them, Kel. Otherwise they'll keep doing this to us," he said. (Kel and Esmond, 80) - I really like that quote too. Funny.
"...when it came to herself, Kel was terrified to speak up. She would hate it if Neal were no longer comfortabe with her. Better to be a coward and still be his friend." (Kel, 92) - Can I relate to that...
"Proud?" Lalasa repeated in a whisper. "But-my lady-I threw you into a door. After all your kindnesses, and teaching me when I've hardly been grateful..." "What I've been teaching you, among other things, is how to throw me into doors." Kel grinned as she got to her feet." (Lalasa and Kel, 137-138)
"Adversity builds charachter?" Neal suggested one bitter morning when she was taking a breather. She looked at Peachblossom. "Bite him," she ordered. The gelding, as contrary as a cat, blew at her. "All right, how's this? He knows you're far better than most of us, and he's trying to make you better still." When Kel blinked at him, Neal shrugged. "Or we could go back to him being a Stump who lives to torture you. I like that one better anyway." (Neal and Kel, 171) - Remember wha Tobe said, that Peachblossom just likes the way Neal squeals when he gets bitten.
"Honor is not nessesary when fighting thieves." (Alanna)
"You can't do anything from the grave." (Alanna)
"I don't like killing when I don't have to." (Alanna)
"...No sense of humor and he rejects change just because its change." (Alanna)
"Not everyone is afraid to do anything new." (Alanna, 4)
"Reflect as if you have all of time, even when time is short." (Ilane, 9)
"I want to be like that, she told herself as she always did. I want to protect people. And I will. I will. I'll be a hero one day, just like Mama. Just like the Lioness. (Kel, 25)
"...she pointed to yet another piece of writing: Girls Can't Fight! Salma's mouth twisted wryly. "What do they think their mothers do, when the lords are at war and a raiding party strikes? Stay in their solars and tat lace?" That made Kel smile. "My aunt lit barrels of lard and had them catapulted onto Scanran ships this summer." "As would any delicately reared noblewoman." Salma opened the door." (Salma and Kel, 33) - *laughs*
"I suppose I'm being rash and peculiar, again," remarked someone in a drawling voice, "but if it means helping my friend Joren improve his studies, welll, I'll just have to sacrifice myself. There's nothing I won't do to further the cause of book learning among my peers." Everyone turned toward the speaker, who stood in the back of the group. Seeing him clearly, Kel thought that he was too old to be a page. He was tall, fair-skinned, and lean, with emerald eyes and light brown hair that swept back from a widow's peak. Lord Wyldon absently rubbed the arm he kept tucked in a sling. "You volunteer, Nealan of Queenscove?" The youth bowed jerkily. "That I do, your worship, sir." There was the barest hint of a taunt in Nealan's educated voice. "A sponser should be a page in his second year at least," Wyldon informed Nealan. "And you will mind your tongue." "I know I only joined this little band in April, your lordship," the youth Nealan remarked cheerfully,, "but I have lived at court almost all of my fifteen years. I know the palace and its ways. And unlike Joren, I need not worry about my academics." Kel stared at the youth. Had he always been mad, or did a few months under Wyldon do this to him? She had just arrived, and she knew better than to taunt the training master. Wyldons eyebrows snapped together. "You have been told to mind your manners, Page Nealan. I will have an apology for your insolence." Nealan bowed deeply. "An apology for general insolence, your lordship, or some particular offense?" "One week scrubbing pots," ordered Lored Wyldon. "Be silent." Nealan threw out an arm like a player making a dramatic statement. "How can I be silent and yet apologize?" "Two weeks." Keladry was forgotten as Wyldon concentrated on the green eyed youth. "The first duty for anyone in service to the crown is obidience." "And I am a terrible obeyer," retorted Nealan. "All these inconvient argument spring to my mind, and I just have to make them." "Three," Wyldon said tightly. "Neal, shut it!" someone whispered. "I could learn-" Kel squeaked. No one heard. She cleared her throat and repeated, "I can learn on my own." (Neal, Wyldon, and Kel, 38) - I like that. I wonder if he actually had to do that?
"Gods of fire and ice, bless my new home ...Keep my will burning as the heart of the volcano, and as hard and implacable as a glacier." (Kel, 48)
"I'll work hard, she promised herself. I'll show everyone what girls can do." (Kel, 52)
"...When you get too comfortable... someone hands you a suprise." (Eda Bell, 55)
No, I didn't just type all this just now, I had it from before. If I see a quote and I like it I type it up or write it down, and the copy and paste was a great invention. I still have too much time on my hands. Can you tell?
