Kel seems to be becoming almost unbeatable with the lance, while Alanna is best with the sword, so Kel would win a joust (most probably) and Alanna would win a duel.

Kel. We never really saw Alanna do any tilting when she was a page, but the POTS books seem to put a lot of emphasis on it.

Yep, I'm the one Alanna Vote... I'm assuming that before the match someone would teach/practice with Alanna. And whether or not she is older than Kel, and in spite of the fact that she is small, Alanna would learn...and eventually she would be good enough that she could win. Hey, maybe she'd even practice on Raoul; they are good friends, afterall.

Alanna. She'd never tilt against Kel unless she'd already learned, and she's older and probably stronger from all those years of training.

Jousting is kind of Kel's "thing", so I voted for her.

But on the other hand, Kel would probably beat her, and then Alanna would practice in secret with Wyldon until she could beat him and then return for a victory against Kel or something like that.

i think in the case of the grown-up alanna, if there were any chance she could beat kel (which i don't think there is, she never learned to joust, remember), she wouldn't joust because she wants people to respect kel.

Yeah, she did. It glosses over it at some point in A:TFA.

Remember, until the immortals came, jousting was getting old - it was really only for knights to prove their skill with in tournaments, not in real warfare. Remember, in Lady Knight - war - Kel never uses a lance.

I think with Alanna in her prime, she would win. However, she's getting older, and I don't think she'd appreciate getting hit with sticks. Swordwork was always her thing, anyway. In a duel, she'd best just about anyone.

Yes, I think you're right. We all know that Raoul knows how to joust, and has been at it for at least 10 years. He had to learn somewhere, and it makes the most sense that he would have learned while he was a page/squire.

>>Remember, in Lady Knight - war - Kel never uses a lance.

Because the foes the lance is best with are giants, ogres, dragons, griffins--the big game. Not that it's legal to kill griffins in Tortall, or any immortal citizens, for that matter. But Raoul takes on giants and ogres with the lance all the time. In fact, when Alanna went up against that family at Mandash in WILD MAGIC, she admitted (though it wasn't in the book) that it was one of the few times she regretted not being bigger with the long stick.

Kel has been trained in jousting by the almighty Raoul *bows*

Alanna hasn't trained to joust, as far as I know.

Kel wins

That makes sense. I don't rememeber Alanna jousting in her series... Could just be my horrible memory, though... Anyway, Kel is really good at it, and as far as I know Alanna doesn't do it, so Kel wins.

I'm making the assumption that joust training would be part of any knight-in-training's regimen. Even so, I think Kel would win. It's something she's focused on, and she's really good at it. I know she'd kick my butt!

~ ok, first off does anyone ever remember reading about alanna learning to joust? no. it mentions in the first book that she will learn tilting (among other things) but it never once describes her doing so. every minute of the day was accounted for, and none of that time was spent jousting. therefore, from lack of experience alanna would loose to kel.

I think that Kel would win, not only because shes so much bigger than alanna but because she dose it so much, she really super good a tilting and raoul did teach her plus when she tilted agianst wyldon last time she actully stayed in the saddle! and he was the person that knocked Raoul out of the saddle ten years ago.

I think Kel would win. She's one of the best jousters, and it's never mentioned that Alanna has some amazing skill at jousting (she has enough amazing skills already).

Kel, because she has more body-weight (no offense meant!) and would be harder to lift out of a tilting saddle! and because Alanna is so small and light, she would just FLY out of her saddle!

It would be funny to watch, though...

Alanna learned to joust as a page, even if I didn't have the space to write about it, but she doesn't like it in the least. As she puts it, she has better things to do with her day than race around poking at things with a really long stick.

Kel would lever her out of the saddle like popping a clam from its shell. Kel's younger, bigger, heavier, and she has the touch, as Raoul and Wyldon point out. She's also had a *lot* more practice than Alanna, who hasn't picked up a jousting lance since her page days.

So behold: Alanna is unhorsed on the field and is lurching to her feet. (This does presuppose that Alanna would even agree to the joust. The truth is, she doesn't. As she says, she has better things to do with her day.) Kel trots around to see if Alanna's okay. Alanna takes off her helm, draws her sword, and uses her free hand to beckon to Kel as she grins evilly.

Alanna: Come on down here and we'll see who calls who "Shorty."
Kel: Uh-oh.

Kel dismounts and takes sword in hand because she's an honest knight, and Alanna slices and dices.

Kel: Ow.

You'll get a glimpse of them in TRICKSTER'S CHOICE!

~hysterical giggle~ Shorty. I love it.
Anyway, I liked how you put it when I asked about Alanna's jousting skills way back in Pittsburgh: "No, she hates it. It's like wrestling, but with a horse and a stick thrown in there, too."

Nim, she is now telling me that I must be smarter than she thinks if I said that.

It's not so much that the voices sound in my head as it is that they are constantly arguing over things.

as long as they're not ogling each other. when the voices start talking dirty is when it gets really frightening.

You have it easy! My voices compulsively set up and solve problems in combinatorics! It's so gotten so I can't pass an ice-cream stand without Voice 1 starting: "So, if there are 9 flavors of ice cream (n=9), and three scoops in a cone (k=3), how many possible combinations and permutations are there?" Then Voice 2 solves it!

I wish my characters would talk to me. Their lives are so much simpler...

*laughs* Shorty...Uh-oh. Tammy, I would give anything to have Alanna and Daine and all them living in my head and arguing. My characters in my stories don't seem to quite like me enough for that yet.

personally, i strongly believe kel would beat alanna, only because she's what i call fresh, meaning still young. also meaning no disrespect towards alanna, just that she's almost always exhausted. another thing, she withstoof lord wyldon that time.
