#25546, "Music in Tortall?"

Just out of curiosity, what types of music and musical instruments do they have in Tortall? I was flipping through "Squire" and I couldn't find any mention of musical instruments anywhere. In fact, the only music I can remeber ever being mentioned is singing.

ARE there musical instruments in Tortall? HELP! I'M GETTING CONFUSED!

Well, they have the hunting horn, and I remember there being a phrase in Alanna about how she couldn't play a musical instrument. There are lots of mentions of minstrels and stuff as well. Oh, and there's a mention in Alanna about how she has to learn to play the lapharp or something like that.
AND it mentions recorders quite a bit in Lady Knight.

She was supposed to learn the lap harp but it's only ever mentioned during the first day of her page training. Somebody once asked Tammy if she ever did learn it (was it me? It seems like the kind of question I would ask...I think it was me) and she said that she did, so there's that. And I would think that Alanna wouldn't have to do something the other pages didn't so everybody in Alanna's generation probably knows the basics of at least one instrument.

Good heavens--of course there's music in Tortall! How could people live without their tunes?! Can you? Could I? I think not!

They have the normal assortment of medieval instruments: lute, gittern, drums, bagpipes, tambourines, harps, dulcimers, recorders, pan-pipes, flutes, horns, harps . . .

I don't write about music so much because so many other fantasy writers do, but it's still there!

what is a gittern and what is a dulcimer?

I knew there was harps and recorders in tortall because alanna has to learn to play a harp. Also in LK Numair is calling boulders to himself by playing a recorder like a demented piper (i loved that line by the way)

A dulcimer is a kind of lute, I think -- like a guitar with a round body and fewer strings. As for a gittern, I've no idea!
