#32958, "Future books."

Just let me get this straight. Sheroes, pretty much, want Tammy to write a series about Daine's daughter, Neal's daughter, Kel's daughter/future, a story about the girls who ask Kel about becoming a knight in Squire, etc.? Isn't this going a little overboard? (Never mind the 50/50 chance that some people have MALE children. Personally, I think a story about Alanna's son Alan would be interesting, but that's just me.) There's only so much she can do people. Wouldn't it be more interesting to read something about a set of characters we've never heard of before? Maybe it's time she created a new world. Anybody think about that?

I like that idea too, actually. My problem with too many books focussing around characters we already know from previous books is that the wonder of the original sheroes - Alanna, Daine, Kel, and Aly - is going to start to wear off. They won't be special anymore - all the characters would have a book focussing on them. I still want books set in Tortall, of course, but revolving around a character we've never met before. (Cameos from the other characters would still be appreciated though!! )

Tammy is doing exactly that, funnily enough! A series set in Tortall, in the past, about a girl being trained by the Lord Provost as a thief-catcher. They're called, ummm

Terrier
Wolfhound
Elkhound

in that order, i think...

Laurie
The Chrestomanci, Duck-child of the Banjiku Tribe, Street Performer and Teller of Jokes in the City of Corus, Prop Master and Overseer of the Snack Table in the Royal Academy of Players, Believer in Truth, Beauty, Freedom and Love

I knew that, actually. I meant after she finished writing all the books she already has planned...but I guess I didn't make it clear.

Duck-child of the Banjiku*, the middle one is actually BLOODHOUND, because you can't shake Rebba (Rebakah, the Provost's Dog) off the scent.

*I just found that title tremendously amusing!

Aha! We have a name now for the Provost's Dog! It's a nice name, too...hehe, there was a girl in my class in Grade 7 named Rebekah, and our French teacher always called her Reba. Which means I'm probably going to get a mental image of that girl when I end up reading Provost's Dog, but that's okay.

A new world would be cool, sometimes. New characters, certainly. Maybe focusing on other countries or other times, but in the Tortall world.

I'm all in favor of a short story anthology for all of these ideas.

But... she has created a new world. COM and whatnot.

And the thing is that not all of us want all of those things. Like, Neal's daughter, I'm not especially terribly interested in a story about that. I'd read it sure, because I love Tammy's books, but I'm more interested in the upcoming books about Maura of Dunlath. Or the possibility of a book about the Shang that was discussed below. Or something about the Yamani, because in Squire the ladies there seem exceptionally cool.

But I really like that we keep seeing the same characters again. I hate getting to the end of books sometimes because it's like the characters die, because you'll never get to read about them doing more. (Like, for instance, Pullman's Dark Materials and Bishop's Dark Jewels, I just want to know more!) Daine's cameos in Kel's books made me sooo happy, because she's my favorite character. And since all of us have favorite characters we want to know more about, we all want different new books written.

Tammy's still young, we can have lots more books.

I'd like to read a book about Neal's daughter because I'd like to know what it'd be like for her, being half Yamani and half Tortallan. How would these two parts of her clash and meet?

By the time Tammy finishes the books she is suppose to write, I'll be 20 years old.*sighs* I think I like staying young.

Neal's daughter: I hadn't even thought about the half-Yamani aspect, though that would actually be quite amusing. What I plan to do when I get to her is show her going for her knighthood with more girls in the mix--Kel and Alanna were the only ones; I want to do a book with Kel and a girl squire, but she also would be dealing with very few other girls. The advantage to Neal's daughter is that by the time she's old enough, there will be more girls (and a different training master).

I'll only continue to write girl knights if I can find a way to do it so I'm not repeating what I've done before. Where's the fun in writing the same thing over and over? I like to be surprised as much as the next person.

Maura of Dunlath may not seem as much fun as the girl knights, but don't write her off as a warrior yet--things get kinda rugged in Dunlath, remember. And besides, it's going to be interesting for Maura to be a proper noblewoman when her main attendants include an ogre and a wolf. Somehow I just can't see her being what people expect.

Veriety is good. Veriety is very good. Jumping ahead in time, like between Song and Immortals, is also very good. It allows lots of change to happen. Changing settings is good, because up until now, no matter how far they traveled, your characters were always about Tortall. Frankly, I'd like to see some different allegiances come into play.

I think both universes still have a world of exploration waiting in them. A lot of the second generation would make better supporting characters than leads. Yes, I'd like to see what Alanna, Jon, Gary, Daine and Neal were able to parent, but I'd also like to see more non-Tortallans, non-whites, non-nobles and even *gasp* non-warriors.

As for Emelan, the possibilities are simply mind-boggling. We know virtually nothing about the pasts of the adults in the series, other than stimulating tidbits. The children are all still very young, and a hefty leap into the future could alter them beyond recognition. Not to mention the staggering possibility of starting out a book with an entirely different character, much like Daine was to Alanna.

In conclusion, veriety is good. Let's have yet more of it!

Lea.

I'm not exactly looking forward to the Maura book (there's only one). I'll read it, obviously, but I'm not jumping up and down about it like I am about TQ or Circle Reforged.

I agree about seeing the same main characters having cameos in the later books, though. Every time I saw Daine in one of the Kel books or in TC, I just about jumped up and down with excitement.

I would want a book about new characters, but still being able to hear about the old ones. I think Alianne is enough in the daughters department. I think a new universe would be intersting, as long as she kept writing about the Emelan one.

I'm really looking forward to that one... of course, I'll practically be out of college by then, which is scary considering I haven't even graduated high school yet... ^^;
That'll be the first one Tammy writes with a male main character, won't it?

Well, if you don't consider Briar(sp?) from CoM a main male charcter, then I guess... i mean, Briar was out of four, but numair will be by himself. So, it all depends on how you look at it.

I loved it whenever Daine made a cameo in PoTS. That's part of the beauty of having a new quartet set in a familiar world. I like to know how everything turned out in the end for people. In fact, I like that so much that I don't read a different series sometimes because I don't really want to know if the new one can't measure up to the old series. That's the reason why I put off reading CoM for a long time.

I think you would do historical fiction very well.

Think of all the people you could bring to life.

And not in the Duke Roger fashion

I like all the Tortall books just the way they r. I like it how Tammy made the books diffrent while there are still the same charecters except that they focus and a diffrent one in each series.

Yeah, and then it'a always nice when you get to see your favorite old characters again, even if they're not the main focus of the book.

My mum doesn't really care - she says I can read whatever I like, as long as it's not Mary-Kate-and-Ashley novelizations. My dad's always after me not to read so much fantasy, though.

What about the Conte children? Further tales from Carthak? Kalasin? Alan? Thom and the University? Just the Tortallan University?

I'd rather see another aspect of Tortallan life than have the girl-knight issue rehashed, even if the social climate from book to book differs. That's why I'm so excited to read TQ and The Provost's Dog Trilogy.

I'd love a story about Kalasin, or perhaps her daughter, showing the Carthak people that girls can be just as good as men - maybe not by becoming a knight, but through another way.

I'd love Kalasin doing that, too... Daine got the point across to Kaddar's friends, but I think at this point, what Carthak really needs is a queen who can show the whole country that.

I do and I don't want tammy to make up another world. I am stuck in Tortall and I can't let it go that easily. But it would be cool to make another world with a different type of magic. That would be awesome.

I wouldn't mind a book about the lady knights *before* Alanna... I remember in one of the SotL books someone mentioned there were woman knights a few hundred years ago or something like that...

I would like a book that the main character wasn't a warrior.Like a book about a noblewoman who went to convent school. She doesn't have to faint at the sight of blood, but she should not defy the tradition.

Wouldn't it be kinda intresting if Kel had a son? I no Tammy's kind of not into writing books about males but it would be something. Well maybe not. I'm trying to come up with why it would be intresting. I don't no. If you come up with somethin let me no.

I really don't care as long as it is a Tortall or Circle-based book. I personally think that she does a good job with fantasy writing and I'm normally bored to tears by science fiction (that's what happens when you're actualy an engineer... you start thinking that a lot of sci fi is pretty stupid).
