Why in hells name does Daine hate chickens? She should at least respect each animal for its greatness and shortcomings. But she just loaths chikens. Some animal lover. It just bothers me, because the chickens I know are some of the most intersting creatures I have ever met.

They could annoy her, but she hates them so much she dosn't mind eating them. Geeze.

well... she hates chickens becuase they're completely brainless. they have no sense. and they panic too easily, which makes it harder for her to save them. i don't see any reason for Daine to like chickens.

Everybody has a pet peeve, and chickens are Daine's. She always had to round theirs up when she was a kid, and got pecked more than once for carrying them back where they were supposed to be. My sister Kim, also an animal love, has held a grudge against chickens ever since one kept her awake all night and then pecked her right between the eyes.

I never cared much for them (the pecking, and the smell) until, a few years back, I happened to have a chicken as a houseguest for a week. I didn't know they had such an extensive vocabulary of sounds, or that this one, at least, purred when I petted her face and told her "chick-chick-chick-chicken." She changed the way I look at chickens, but I was through with the Daine books by then.

And Daine has every right to dislike chickens. Just because she has a connection with animals doesn't mean she has to love all of them - Briar probably doesn't like every single plant in his world (weeds, for example. They're plants, but both he and Rosethorn don't like them because they choke out the growth of other plants).

Being pecked by chickens hurts! I once got chased and clawed by an insane rooster. I've enjoyed eating chicken ever since.

LOL. Thats pretty funny. I was chased by gulls once...it was funny too, but kinda like a scene from the movie Birds.

lol yeah. That movie shall forever be referenced. Glad you survived the gull encounter; those birds are territorial too!

I personally quite like chickens.
It did annoy me a little when I first read the books how Daine disliked chickens, but recently I've understood that no one likes everything, and that everyone needs something that they don't much like.

*shurg* It's just her thing. Like my dad hates it when I leave things hanging on doorknobs, and I hate books where animals do human things, like wear clothes and build windmills.

Besides, chickens smell quite bad. And peck.

Some chickens are friggin smart. Its scary. Like Jena's little Bantam who was able to fly (sort of) up to the hay loft where it would then jump out the open barn window in order to get at anyone (me) who came to visit. Not only that but this chicken was fast I've seen members of the track team sprint across the yard, chicken in hot pursuit. Yeah, I like chickens.

I agree, some chickens are smart. Celine wasn't the smartest chicken; she used to stick her head in my friend's horse's nostril. I don't know why, but she seriously did. But I see where Daine is coming from. I think it makes sense for her not to like chickens. It fits.

i have chickens of my own and they are very smart... smell nice... and are very awake during the day! they arent stupid thank you very much! well mine arent. i quite like chickens. obviously no one owns chicken of their own. if you did then you would know that roosters are the only one that peck and scratch!!!!! and thats only when they're treated wrongly.

I have chickens. I don't really like them that much, except for the bantams. They're smarter. And not all of them are dumb, but a lot of them are. I used to really not like chickens, but then I took care of one that wasn't dumb. So far, there have only been about 5 that I've met that aren't. But I can really understand why Daine doesn't like them.

Um, not to say that chickens aren't smart, but Daine doesn't like them because they don't cooperate when she's trying to do something to save them. And she eats all animals that are reared for eating, not just chickens.

well, some friends of mine have chickens and they're cute if not the most intelligent animals on the face of the earth. But even though I like them I can completely understand how Daine could not like them

I had chickens for awhile. I'd gotten them as chicks and seen them grow so I was rather attached to them. They didn't move around much, just sat on the edge of a stair, a giant ball of white fluff haha.

Well, even animal lovers can have their limits, I suppose. Ace Ventura hated bats, remember?

When I lived in Scotland I used to go to play and roll down my neighbor's big hill and field. Whenever I'd bring a sandwich his stupid chickens would run over to be and attack me! The pecking, the squacking...the stolen food! They had scarred me for life...

Okay, so maybe this is all dramatized since I was only five or six, but chickens are still freaky creatures...

I have nothing against Daine for disliking chickens.
