#37522, "What happened to Duke Gareth's finger??"

I just finished re-reading Alanna the First Adventure today and i was wondering... what happened in the Chamber of Ordeal that took Duke Gareth's finger?? I'm not sure if anyone here would know besides Tammy, but i figured i'd ask

I feel like I've lost everything, when you're gone

Currently Reading: The Half Blood Prince

several theories:

1) That losing a limb was one of his greatest fears, and in facing it, he lost his finger.

2) The more sound you make in the Chamber, the worse it is. He maybe cried out just a very little, so only lost a finger. Joren screamed really loudly (maybe) and died.

3) It was something really stupid, like he got it slammed in the Chamber door and it had to be amputated. But he doesn't mention that aspect, in order to make the Ordeal seem scarier and more mysterious to young, impressionable, pages. "I lost this in the Chamber of the Ordeal" sounds much more portentios that "I slammed this in the door of hte Chamber of the Ordeal"

well, I'm not saying I agree with the theory of the chamber door and all but it it *could* have been him when he was eighteen. All young and excited. Actually, it's kinda' hard to imagine Duke Gareth young. Couldn't he have been born an old man

YES! Duke Gareth was born an old man...when i was little, and i would hear stories of my dad when he was little, i always imagined him like he was, except shorter.

He was so scared...

He tried to keep quiet, but bit through his lip.

That hurt, so he bit through his finger.

In hindsight, he was very, very grateful the ordeal wasn't longer....

Seriously? I don't know. Alanna's hands all got tore up, when she was fighting through the net, but that was outside influence. I think in the ordeal, everything they experience is 'real'- it can hurt them, or kill them, if they don't fight. So maybe a sword got past his defence, or the idiot blocked with his hand, or something.

oh tammy -- why do you always have to burst our bubble?? After all, we're just speculating because we are obsessive about you. And want to know everything... Too bad we can't...oh..it wouldn't work anyway. Forming a space colony with you (and Tim) as our president would be just a tad far fetched, yes? So. Stop bursting our bubbles and stop (well, not really) making us start them by giving us a sentence and then letting us dangle drooling for more.
Cheers!

*gasp* Duke Gareth, lie? It's a travesty?

Actually, that does make sense, except I can't really see him lying.

ah, good ol' Tammy. come to save the day and put our wonderings to rest. but is it really a good thing to do that? honestly. i think it's more fun to just sit around and speculate than it is to actually have answers. where would we be without speculation? can someone please tell me?

(personally, i think we'd all be sitting in our chairs, drooling. yep, drooling becuase we have to brains. ...do we have brains?)

Darn! I was really rooting for three. It sounds much better than him losing it in the wars.
