#44517, "Oh...Kudarung...I get it!"

I had a bit of an epiphany last night while re-reading TQ. The word 'Kudarung' has always niggled at me, you know the feeling, as if it should mean something to you, but you can never quite remember what it is. Anyway, last night I worked it all out! (At least, I hope I did...if Tammy meant to do this, then she's extra-super special, if not...well it's a damn lucky coincidence.)

Kuda = 'Horse' in Indonesian
Bu*rung* = 'Bird' in Indonesian

Has anyone else noticed this? Or am I making a fool of myself by repeating a useless fact that everybody already knows?

I didn't know. And I just checked with my dad (who's Indonesian). Both translations are correct, just to add weight to what you said.

Edit: Typo monster came and played with my post.

As if Tammy is good enough with the English language, she has to go showing off in other languages as well. Very cool point, though. I never would have known that.

I hadn't noticed, but that would be because I don't happen to speak Indonesian.

I DID notice a while ago, in this page-a-day calendar I had last year that gives you word origins, that the word Copper was derived from the word Kyprin, or something close to that - I can't remember, and I'm too lazy to go find the page it was on. I thought that was really cool.

This is from the Oxford English Dictionary.

Copper. n.

I could have my pronunciation wrong, but knowing how some other Greek to Roman translations have gone Cyprian could be the same as Kyprin. Just some food for thought.

Okay, so I assume you all know Mithros, right? Well, reading the Da Vinci Code, there seems to have been a pre-Chrsitian god named Mithras. Pretty cool...

oh, Mithros is a total knock of of Mithras, who was also a sun god. Just like the Great Mother Goddess is the three-fold Goddess of pagan religions. Read Mists of Avalon and the Maiden, Mother and Hag are all in there. It's not so much that tammy's ripping them off, and more like she's taking examples of plausible, real-world religions and putting them in her books.

I believe Mynoss and Shakith are also similar to real-world god names... not entirely sure. perhaps egyptian? perhaps not.

And I can see gods like Kidunka the World Snake coming from other cultures' creation myths. For example, some earth North American myths involve the world starting on the back of a turtle and such.

Edited to add original message quote:
>>Copper. n.

It's from the Greek--kypros. It's also the original name of the island of Cyprus, which was famous as a source of raw copper.

Like I say so often, I really dislike making things up when I can just steal from the real world!

You have an Indonesian dad? I think you are RELATED TO ME.

(actually, my dad is American but grew up in Jakarta. Shhh.)

And the kudarung thing is so cool. Just think, I have a walking Indonesian dictionary here at home and I never thought to check any of the words in TQ!

Edit: Misspellation.

I come from Perak. My friend comes from Sarawak, though. Never been there myself.

That is so neat! It seems like a lot of her names are derivatives from other languages but that one is particularly good. Great job of thinking of it!

I never would've got that. The best I ever did was to discover that Hoshi/ko means star in Japanese as well as in Yamani.

>>tammy researches stuff beforehand then eh?

Beforehand, during . . .

The Copper Isles and Indonesia made me crazy, because Indonesia is a mix of over fifty languages and cultures. (Sorry, Indonesian friends, but you yourselves were saying what a bear the language is.) To pull together a culture for the Isles I got architecture and tourist books for nearly every country from Myanmar to Papua New Guinea to have enough pictures to describe things from, tropical garden books and tropical house books just for the pictures of houses in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, three new cookbooks, a fat new book of South Pacific island people names in addition to the 22 baby name books I already have . . . At least I already had the maps (I pull place and last names out of little-known place names on detailed maps), the phrase books and dictionaries, the wildlife books, and the clothes books.

The one good thing about CIRCLE REFORGED is that I still have the stuff I used to create the Namornese culture for COLD FIRE!

Clothes... I remember hating my baju kurung. I kept tripping over the skirt. I prefer my Chinese costume, mainly because my mum allows me to wear trousers.

Why won't she use Latin refrences so I'll actually understand these subtle hint/clue/things?

Ooh. I'd forgotten about that. I knew horse, but never got around to looking up the second half.

I was proud of myself, because I knew all of the Japanese (Yamani) names in PotS. Tammy, you do steal a lot of languages!

Oh dear.... lol. Because I say the same thing. I "liberated" my dad's Manhatten Transfer CD (but shh, because he'll kill me if he figures that out) and also my mom's BareNakedLadies cd... and one of her classical CDs...

She didn't think that liberating was much different from stealing, no matter how I sliced it. You win some you lose some, eh?
