Do I say anywhere--I think it would be in the Alanna books--when the Contés ascended to the throne? Even a rough number of centuries ago would be useful.

Im pretty sure there have been no references to any other rulers besides the Old Ones...and that was without a date... It wouldnt make sense though for these people to be "Old Ones" because they all left and it appears Reba is an ancestor of George.

i thought i vaguely remembered something about that too, but as it turns out i was remembering stuff about the history of other countries (galla, maren, and tyra) with respect to the dominion jewel. that's in LR, chapter 2.

-headdesk- It's there, I know it is, ahh... um...
Oh god, er....
-facepalm-
I know I saw someting... just.... can't…remember! EDIT: In Trickster's Queen's prologue, it has a footnote that says Barzun was conquered by Tortall in the year 378 H.E. "Giving Jasson III of Tortall control of the eastern coastline" Was Jasson Conte` ? I suppose that isn't long before the Alanna books, so it must be a conte` I SWEAR I remember something.... -returns to banging head on desk-

you never mentioned an exact date. You did, however, name Jonathan's ancestors only back to the "Old King" Jason, who you wrote something about how he conquered lands surrounding the old Tortall.
I don't think there was canon saying Jason was the first Conte king- just that Tortall was smaller once upon a time.
No mention as far as I recall when they exactly came into power... although they are in the Book of Gold, and that's old, isn't it?

I don't recall a date about when the Conte's claimed the throne. However, i am now deeply intrigued. Planning on writing about it? (PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! It sounds really interesting.)

I remember when George and Alanna were figuring out who put the bir under the saddle and who would take the throne next, I was wanting more information for who else was in the family, even if not related to the storyline. I know about Jasson, the grandad, but after that, nada.

The Conté family is in The Book of Silver, because Coram was nattering about Trebond being in The Book of Gold. The Conté family took the throne four Jonathans ago--the first Conté king was a Jonathan. That would have been about . . . um . . . 300 years ago. (The Old Ones were gone about 2500 years ago!)
The Old King, Jasson II, was Jon's grandfather, which puts his day about 90-odd years ago.
So if you folks, who have read the books more recently, don't know anything to contradict that, this means I am 100 years into the Conté reign.
And before you ask, I don't know the house who held the throne before them. I'll let you know when I think of it!

...although there's the whole Jonathon III vs. Jonathon IV thing... no, don't hit me, please.
All I remember is that royal families get their rights from the gods... which I suppose was explained in a way through Trickster.
Interesting... somehow, I always assumed the Conte line was in the Book of Gold... and I'd always thought they had held the throne for a very, very long time...
Then how old is the country of Tortall, paticularly in comparison to the royal family? I know the palace was built on Old Ones remains, but is the kingdom that old, or did some conquerer decide it would be easier that way?
Edited to add: Speaking of the Provost's Dog books, the Dominion Jewel was in Maren two hundred years ago - any mention of that?
